* There are many ways to define detection, recognition, and identification. In order to cut through the industry "bull" and create an objective basis for comparison, we offer up the following definitions which are very popular in the surveillance field: Human Detection –A 1.8-meter tall person is represented by 10 or more vertical pixels on a surveillance monitor. Human Recognition –A 1.8-meter tall person is represented by 30 or more vertical pixels on a surveillance monitor. NATO Target Detection –A 2.3m x 2.3m vehicle is represented by XX or more vertical pixels on a surveillance monitor. NATO Target Recognition –A 2.3m x 2.3m vehicle is represented by XX or more vertical pixels on a surveillance monitor. Why do we go to such great pains to say exactly what we mean? It has become somewhat popular in the industry to use vague terms like "detection" without backing it up with a helpful definition. There are cases, for example, where companies might sell 3 pixels (with 50% probability) as "detecting" an object. And while the number of pixels may not be the answer to someone’s surveillance problems, it’s certainly a helpful way to create a simple comparison in a highly complex field.
